22/12/2009 10:52:35 PM - Kate Wiese Media
On Saturday the 12th of December the Biocycle Waste Water Treatment SA9 Lighting Sprint team made their way to Murray Bridge Speedway, for the Second round of the Smithfield Crash Repairs Lighting Sprint Challenge Series. It was a good weather for racing. The Lighting sprints had an awesome field of 17 cars to contest the meeting. The format for the night was two 12 lap heats, an 8 lap dash for top eight points for the night and a 20 lap A-main feature race to finish the night off.
In the first heat Kate started out of position 1 alongside SA 20 Lee Payne. Both cars got off to a good start and raced side by side till turn three where Kate got the leg up on Lee and drove away from the pack in Position 1. The race for 2nd and 3rd was hot behind Kate. The SA 9 Green Machine kept a good lead from the pack before a red was brought on by the SA16 car rolling over in turn 3. Kate lead the field in for the re start and got off to another great start and got about 6 car length on the pack behind her. About 3 laps to go Kate had a bit of a scary moment entering turn 3 where she struck a rut and got some air time. After this Kate slowed as she felt something was broken on the car, but was still able to hold on to first position. 200 points was gained towards the series. In the second heat the SA 9 car had a position 6 start. This heat would be hard to make position up to make some valuable points towards the series. Kate got off to an average started and had to make up a lot of ground. As the laps fell a few cars retired from the race and there were a few restarts and to allow the SA9 Green Machine get back some positions. After the second restart Kate moved to the top of the race track where she was able to claim another position to move up to position 3 for the heat. Kate had some pressure coming from the bottom of the track from SA 1 Nick Hall. The track up top was just a little faster and Kate was able to hold on to 3rd position. 140 points was gained for the series.
After the heat races Kate was in on 3rd highest points for the night going in to the 8 Lap Dash. The dash is a reverse grid for the top points which would mean the SA9 Lighting Sprint car would start out of Position 6. Kate didn’t get a very good start and just held on to her 6th position which meant that she would start out of position 6 in the feature event for the night.
Going in to the A-main feature race for the night the team was confident that they had a good car to see out the distance of the 20 lap event. Kate got a great start and moved up to position 5 where she stayed for about half a race. Kate got in to a good racing line where she made ground on the lead pack. Lap after lap she drew the lead group in closer. Kate was right on the tail of the Victorian car which was having some power steering problems. Kate made the move going in to turn 1 and passed the Vic who ran high in the corner. There was a yellow that came on not long after which meant Kate would go back in to position 5 again behind the Vic. On the restart made the move again going in to turn 1 and made it stick this time. As the laps drew closer to the end Kate got right up behind 3rd position, which was a great battle. Kate was unable to make a move on position 3 and held on to position 4 at the end of the race. 65 points gained towards the series.
Kate Said after the nights racing “I was really happy with the way I raced tonight; it was great to have a full field of Lighting Sprints. I am really looking forward to the State Title at Renmark in the New Year. It will be a hotly contested title.”
The SA9 team is running third in the State series after the second round. Kate has a total of 850 points. Kate is 60 points behind 2nd position for the series.
